About Us
We are a small Saddlebred breeding farm in the beautiful
Mission Valley in Western Montana. Though we are off the beaten track in
the Saddlebred world and are not a show barn per say, we are producing good
quality gaited type Saddlebreds with the show ring in mind. While we strongly
believe the Saddlebred can "do it all", we are committed to the
belief that the Saddlebred is the premier gaited horse breed.
The history of the breed began with people who wanted a horse that could
pull a buggy at the trot and get you somewhere fast.
The next day they wanted to be able to ride that same horse somewhere doing
a comfortable lateral gait and still get there fast.
They also wanted to accomplish that travel on a beautiful, elegant animal
they could be proud of. At Sweet Home Saddlebreds we are still breeding
for that fundamental goal; the Cadillac of horses with a big motor!
Each of our stallions has something different to offer the mare owner, but
our principal stallion, Sunset's Mighty Storm, has the strongest, game,
gaited horse bloodlines you are apt to find anywhere in the country.
Our modern Saddlebreds are indeed the most beautiful of horses, but in our
estimation, in the last 30 years or so, our industry has bred for beauty
at the expense of our horses ability to do the five gaits they were originally
bred to do. At Sweet Home Saddlebreds our goal is to breed for the old time
nimble, exciting athlete first with beauty being the frosting on the cake.
